When Victoria’s Secret Angel, Josephine Skriver, was a child, football was off limits. Her mother, at a same-sex marriage, did not want her daughter, who was conceived by IVF (in vitro fertilization), to fall into the “gay family” trope, becoming a tomboy. “She tried to get me to do everything” Skriver says. “Like dancing and gymnastics.”
Although Skriver finally reached the age of 12, playing in defense for the school team, did not last long. She began to be seen on soccer field trips and, at the age of 15, signed with Denmark’s largest modeling agency. (Good news to his mother, who had been praying for it ever since Skriver wore newborn diapers.)
You’d think, with such a glamorous side line, Skriver would have abandoned his after-school cleaning. “Actually, it was great because I could practice walking in high heels while I was vacuuming” she laughs. “I have not been able to use them at home since they damaged the floor.”
But it was worth it, because two years later, Victoria’s Secret called her. They took her to New York Fashion Week, then filmed a catalog with Adriana Lima. “At that moment, next to Adriana, I knew I wanted to become an Angel” says Skriver. In February last year, at the age of 22, she fulfilled her dream.
Now the Danish model has other ambitions, like becoming a doctor or going to Mars. “Recently, I became really interested in space. I’d like to visit Mars for a few days” she says. “If I can figure out how to get the money for a ticket …” Does anyone help a supermodel?

Josephine is stamping three different covers of the June 2017 Harper’s Bazaar Turkey edition. Josephine stopped New York traffic when photographed by Frenchman Jack Yerim Waterlot wearing designer clothing such as Tommy Hilfiger and Versace. The model gave an interview that talked about how she started her modeling career, beauty and about her relationship with her boyfriend Alexander DeLeon. Check out all the material below:
Everyone has a turning point in their life. But the best stories are always models’. They are discovered in beaches, supermarkets etc, what is your story?
We were on a trip with my football team. We were staying with a family in Delaware via exchange program. We came to NY for a day. When we were at Times Square, just as we were passing Madame Tussauds someone from an agency asked my coach if I was considering modeling. Back then we only said no and walked away. I remember thinking how weird that question was and I could never picture myself as a model even in a million years. But when I came back to Denmark, ironically I was asked the same question 4-5 times by Unique Models, the biggest agency in our country while walking down in the streets, I was confused. When I had a chat with one of my aunt’s best friends, we decided to call the agency. We had a nice conversation, and I was signed nearly 5 mins after I arrived there! I couldn’t believe what happened. That’s how the life of a quiet, shy girl living and trying to get by in Copenhagen changed.
And the rest just happened right after, right?
Actually I wasn’t prepared mentally for modeling. I was only 15&school was my priority. When I was 16, I gave my all to my school’s sports academy. I wanted to enjoy my teen years before I jumped into a foreign world. I’m still sensitive about the fact teens are forced to grow up so early! That’s why I had my first NYFW experience when I was 18. Then everything happened right after. I took part in nearly every fashion show that year. You know the rest…
Where is Victoria’s Secret in your life?
Josephine: As they said, nothing happens overnight. Being chosen as a VS angel happens step by step. It takes hours, years, sweat, tears, and hardwork. It is not enough to be your best physical-self, you have to be at max mentally and emotionally. There is no better honor than being cast as an angel in my career. I remember how I watched Helena Christensen, the first Danish angel with admiration.
Where do you live?
New York and Nashville! I love how I have a home in both places: it is my yin yang. Living in Nashville makes me miss the big city chaos. And New York makes me miss the tranquility of Nashville.
If you wanted to summarize how your life has been going, what would you say?
Josephine: I’d definitely say that I’m living my dreams. I still poke myself to see if these are all real. People might think my good career is the reason of my happiness. But the truth is what makes me happy is the fact that my career is so demanding and unpredictable.
Even though you are very busy with work, how do you recharge your body and soul whenever you get the chance?
I’ll say spending time with my friends because the best treatment I can give to myself is to laugh! I’m always on the road so when I get the chance, my priority is to receive love and laughs from my family and friends.
Sports are a big part of your life, correct?
Josephine: Yes, I’ve always been sporty. I used to join every sports team and try all. They called me “tomboy”. I wanted to prove that girls can be as good as boys at sports. Now I do sports only for myself and it has become my therapy. Everyday for 2 hours, I leave all my problems aside. Recently, I’ve been focused on lifting. It has shaped my body faster than anything I’ve ever tried. Whichever sport you’re into, at the end of the day your motivation should be to aim to be the best you can be.
Let’s talk about your style, your wardrobe…
Honestly my favorite wardrobe is my boyfriend’s! I can combine pieces of his with mines. For example, I wear my VS pieces with his John Elliot’s. His wardrobe keeps getting smaller because I get a lot from him. Like all women I too can’t resist completing my looks with nice shoes and bags. I almost never go out without my Chanel “Boy” or my Saint Laurent blazer.
A cliched question; but we wonder everything you do for the sake of beauty and skincare.
I keep everything simple with skincare. I wash and moisturize my face day-night. I tried so many products so I don’t have a favorite yet. I don’t do makeup when I’m not working. Maybe some browpencil, concealer and mascara. I drink liters of water and I don’t think there is any better skincare than that. I start my day with warm water and lemon. And getting enough sleep is just as important as water.
You are only 24 but you already have 4 million followers on social media. Isn’t that mind blowing?
Social media has been so good to me, I get to keep in touch with my fans. I love writing to them and learning about their lives. I find this amazing to keep in touch with everyone I love. Of course living on the phone isn’t a good thing but it has more pros than cons.
Now we are at the favorite part of your story: your original birth story and your childhood. We are all shaped by our childhood memories and we wonder yours a lot.
I never thought about this until I got old enough to start being asked about it, did you know that? I never even though it’d make people wonder, that’s when I found out love and family shouldn’t be defined with limitations. Why do we do that? Because when there’s a definition it only has one meaning. But family means to different people can be different, I don’t think blood relations have to do with family either, love and family can be however you want it to be. I’m not trying to inspire and support a group of people while saying this. My purpose is to tell eveeyone love is more than a definition. You should look at different POVs and not just one. I learned this from my family so much that us not being a traditional family didn’t change anything at all for me.
I’m sure your story made brilliant contributions to your character.
Absolutely! It made me very open minded. I never view anything with limitations. I can try to put a triangle in a square social codes have never concerned me. This growed my feelings of empathy to those who are left out, who can’t raise their voices. I am thankful because I can see world in this way.
And love… The love you and your boyfriend Alexander DeLeon have for each other is so strong that we can feel it through our phone screens. Considering that love has many types; what is yours like?
I was a hopeless romantic in my teen years. I was living for those tales in books and movies hoping they could be real. You start to doubt those tales when you start to grow older. But I still kept on hoping. I felt like I couldn’t settle for anything less than those tales, and somehow I found Alexander. Aka the person who makes me feel better in every way, the person who made me grow and laugh, loved me for who I am, loved my weirdnesses, and I love his. He filled me with life that I never know could exist that much. There’s something I’ve learned for sure: Never settle for anything less than you want. And never leave someone like that when you find them.
Maxim Magazine has released a list named “The 100 Sexiest Women in the World” in the special issue of the June 2017 magazine which features Hailey Baldwin on the cover, which came first in the list. Of course Josephine would not be left out, she stayed in the group “The Head Turners”, along with models like Emanuela de Paul, Jessica Strother, Jasmine Sanders and Devon Windsor and among others. You can check the complete list here.
“A regular model for Victoria’s Secret and Balmain, Skriver is one of fashion’s most famous faces”.
On Monday, 22, the new Victoria’s Secret commercial was released for the brand’s summer campaign. The commercial was recorded in March in Miami. In addition to Skriver, the commercial features Romee Strijd, Jasmine Tookes, Elsa Hosk, Taylor Hill, Lais Ribeiro, Sara Sampaio and Stella Maxwell. Check out the candids and commercial below:

Josephine Skriver may be living many girls’ dreams as an Angel of Victoria’s Secret, but for her, growing up in Copenhagen was what story books were made of. “I always thought I lived in a fairytale country with a Queen and a King because I knew there were so many places I did not” the Danish model told HELLO! US. “They’ve always been so open with us, every year you’re going to wave to the Queen and she walks the city.”
The 24 years old beauty also remembered the time Queen Margrethe passed through her. “I was there for the wedding with the crown prince and the crowned princess,” she said during the celebration in New York of the iconic fragrance of the Bombshell brand on Wednesday. “I have to take the school out, I had to be eight, and I remember that was the greatest moment. [There was] a real-life princess. “
Now Josephine calls the United States home and has planted her roots south with her boyfriend, singer-songwriter Alex DeLeon, whom she has been with since 2013. “I just bought a house in Nashville, so I’ll do it a lot,” he said. The world traveler mentioned of all future travel plans. “It’s a bit early for me to plan the summer. I just want to go to the beaches. I want to go on vacation. I’ll just see where it leads me. “
No matter where she ends up, VS beauty shares that she always has the iconic Victoria’s Secret Bombshell on hand, especially when out with her man. “This is my fragrance of the night. He loves it because it’s so subtle, “she admits. “You have to get a little closer to smell it, which is kind of cool, because it’s kind of your own secret.”
Josephine, who joined the family of Angels from Victoria’s Secret in 2016, also revealed that she most feels like a bomb when she is happy. “There’s something about having fun and laughing,” she says. “I always thought having fun makes you feel sexy and there is a bomb in all of us.”
Still on the same day as the announcement of the new Victoria’s Secret fragrance, Bombshell, Stella Maxwell and Josephine gave one more interview together, now for Teen Vogue, where they talked about beauty in general. Check out the article below:
My first impression of Stella Maxwell and Josephine Skriver was a blur of spinning bodies. The supermodels are spinning and fiddling around making Boomerangs in a room full of bright balloons gathered in New York to talk about beauty. When I walk into a hotel room above the city to find them, I am slightly overwhelmed by their giant smiles, piles of VS embroidered pillows everywhere, and the fresh scent floating through the air.
On a tray full of sweet-colored perfumes (including the new perfume from VS ‘Bombshell Summer’, a joyful blend of grapefruit, blackcurrant and lily of the valley), the duo begins by squandering wisdom gained from countless catwalks and rehearsals. They are clearly experts in connecting with a camera – at a certain point, they can find the best light in the room in less than 5 seconds to take a selfie together. But, they are also aware that their most powerful means of communication is through social networks. On Instagram, by herself, Stella and Josephine are 2.8 and 2.9 million followers, respectively.
“It’s a really powerful platform,” says Stella. “Jo and I could take a picture now with our new Bombshell perfume and post it to millions of people in a matter of seconds.” Having such a large audience can make them rethink all words before posting, but both models have reacted to their impressive reach by being open with their fans. And while we take a deep dive into beauty, it is gratifying to see that your definitions of the word go far beyond the surface. From self-tanning lessons to inclusivity lessons, read on for the ‘unfiltered’ tips on every facet of the industry.
We are finally coming in the summer and this season is definitely tough with beauty routines, what are your favorite summer beauty tips:
Josephine: I always feel like summer is about minimizing your makeup because you’re so I keep it super lightweight. It’s also a time I go on vacation. For me, the memories are actually built with scents, so I always have a specific frâgancia for the summer. I love having a new one every year because when I smell it, it specifically reminds me of that time. They (VS) literally vacationed in a bottle with the new Summer Bombshell. In the second you put it on, you’re like, “I need to pack my bags and go!”, I know this year vacations are definitely going to be on the beach, because he just screams, “I need to be on a beach!” I can not wait to make memories with him.
For shows and rehearsals, I’ve heard that self-tanning is a staple. Do you have any tips to avoid self-tanning failure? Has it happened to you yet?
Stella: I think it’s about preparing your skin and being very well hydrated. VS has several good moisturizers for the preparation. I like the Coconut Range because of the smell. Some lotions may smell crazy, but those always smell good.
Josephine: That’s my favorite too. And another very good trick they always teach us is mixing body lotion with body oil because it super moisturizes the skin. And I would say: rub enough and find the bronze that fits your color – because some may be orange. Everything is discovered. It does not have a specific brand that is good for everyone.
Have you, growing up during your careers, already had to deal with some insecurity with your beauty? If yes, how did you overcome?
Josephine: Being a girl, in general, is a strange world. I think it’s about speaking well of herself – I went through a phase where I gave myself a compliment every day for my own empowerment. I think it’s also important to praise what you see in others. The more I praise the others, the more I am happy. It’s about being happy. Nobody’s perfect, and it’s about being okay with it.
You two have many followers on social networks. What does it mean for you to have a platform, and are there any specific problems you want to have a voice over or messages that you want to spread?
Josephine: I love having a platform and a voice. I come from a LGBTQ family – I’ve never had too many problems during my growth, but I realize that the world is a little different when you leave a certain bubble. To have a platform is not necessarily be like: “This is my agenda, you have to believe it,” but more about sharing my story and teaching the world that there is room for everyone. I know a lot of people in the LGBTQ community had problems being bullied while they discovered their identity. I think it’s important to listen to stories and talk about them. Everyone is unique in their own way and perfect just the way it is. I do not think there’s anything “wrong” or “right”, especially when it comes to family. Family is much more than having the same blood.
There is a great and ongoing discussion about changing beauty and inclusion patterns in the industry. In your perspective, how do you see issues such as identity, diversity, and representation? Do you see that changing?
Josephine: I think it’s super cool that everyone has a unique point of view. I still think there are too many boxes, and I wish we did not have to label everything; My hope is that we can only be human. I do not need to assume myself as something, like someone who fits into a box. I had this conversation with a friend of mine – he assumed to be gay and he was like, “But now I feel like I should fit into a box.” And I was like, “You can still be yourself.”
I want family to be a word that combines people – not necessarily a specific guideline, and the same thing with the way you love. I think people should be allowed to be themselves.
Stella: I think nowadays everyone is becoming more open and there has been a huge change. I think fashion has influenced that. People are more open and comfortable now in our industry. It’s a small but powerful bubble because I think it speaks to everyone. And I see a huge transition – I think everyone is getting more comfortable and judging less.
Josephine: I think so too. And with social networks, it’s harder to be ignored. Now people know what trans means and what it means to complain. For us, even what ‘modeling’ means – is much more than –
Stella: – a face.
Josephine: Or even know about different cultures around the world. You see people post about where they are and it’s becoming more of a global feeling. I love brands like Victoria’s Secret that really empowers the woman in you. Everyone is an Angel, no matter where you come from. There is an Angel in all of us.
Recently Josephine Skriver gave an interview to The National Geographic Traveler where she told us about her diet secrets, her incentives to always keep exercising, and a trick everyone loves about how to make her eyelashes longer. Check out the interview below:
You’re too busy working – how do you relax?
I like playing with friends – as crazy as it may sound, the more I laugh, the more relaxed I get! I also love to travel and explore new cities.
Your favorite trip?
I spent a few days camping inside the Hang Son Doong, the world’s longest cave in Vietnam. We did not have technology and we were able to take it all and really enjoy the world around us.
Where do you go to unwind?
One of the most beautiful, untouched places in the world is the North Shore of Kauai, Hawaii Island – perfect for clearing your mind and feeling free.
Do you eat as a place abroad?
Eating is a big part of experiencing another culture. I try to eat clean while also experimenting with new delicacies. There are many different fruits and vegetables everywhere you go and each destination has healthy food choices.
How do you keep in shape when you’re out?
I take my TRX (Total-body Resistance Exercise) and other tapes so I have no excuses not to keep me active no matter where I go. Running makes it easier because you can do this anywhere – it’s a great way to explore the destination. At home, I train most days at DogPound in New York, mixing exercises to focus on different parts of the body. I like lifting the weights to shape my arms.
Got some passing health tips? Coconut oil?
I eat in the morning, I use it as a hair treatment and I still shoot my makeup with it – it’s like magic.
What’s in your beauty kit?
Eye wash, face mask and eyebrow kit – nothing fits you faster than a well-made eyebrow. After a long flight, I pass the face mask at the time of going to bed so I wake up shining, even for early morning calls!
Any makeup trick?
I hold a teaspoon in my eyelids while applying mascara; It makes it easier to place the product on the roots of the eyelashes, while curving them for greater definition – a very big trick.
And your favorite skin care product?
I blend coconut oil with Victoria’s Secret Coconut Milk Moisturizing Body Lotion for silky-smooth skin.
Should you have exercises on your cell phone?
I like apps that go with my time and goals while I’m working hard – almost like having a personal trainer with you.
What are the fitness trends you love?
Training with partner – you really inceive each other and this is how I get stronger. Plus, it’s fun to work out with a friend.
Favorite stores for training equipment?
Victoria Sport by Victoria’s Secret. Super-comfortable and made of material that keeps you cool; All different styles are really cute – I love strappy sports bras.
Any diet secrets?
Portions, portions, portions! You can eat almost anything if you are careful! I clean when I can, but sometimes I let go and treat myself to a hamburger or ice cream.
How do you stay positive?
I look forward to any situation: life is much more fun this way.
Who inspires you?
My mother who balances work, family and fun so well, my boyfriend (Alexandre DeLeon), with his passion to see the world and his creativity; My friends for how hard they work to achieve their dreams.
Last Wednesday, 10, Josephine along with Angel Stella Maxwell gathered at the Victoria’s Secret store on New York’s famed Fifth Avenue to publicize the new Bombshell fragrance and among several interviews the couple gave, they talked a little With the US Magazine about his favorite scents and his blond hair. Check out the interview below:
Which scent is your jam? How can you even choose?
Maxwell: The Paris one is my favorite. It’s a little woodier, muskier… it’s got a little bit of jasmine… that’s more my vibe than a sweet florally one. But I also like Bombshell Summer — it makes you want to get out on the beach… it’s warm and energetic.
Skriver: I love the Bombshell, the iconic one — it’s in between sexy and sweet. It has a warm vanilla note at the end.
Where do you spray your fragrance?
Skriver: Everywhere! I feel more naked without fragrance than I do without underwear. I even put fragrance on before bed. I just spray it all over. And when I go away on a trip, I spritz my pillow so my boyfriend misses me. I’m just like, “there you go, byeee!”
Maxwell: I spray it behind my ear, because if anyone’s going to hug you, they’re going to smell that area.
And how about makeup — do you feel naked without that, too?
Skriver: Summer’s all about minimal makeup. As soon as you get a little sun on your face, you get a natural glow.
Maxwell: I like a tinted moisturizer. Laura Mercier and Max Factor have really good ones.
Skriver: A little lip and maybe concealer. I forget I have makeup on, so I like to use a little matte lip stain. The new Victoria’s Secret Velvet Matte Cream Lip Stains are great because they stay on but they’re also easy to take off. Plus, they have a lot of Vitamin E in them so they don’t dry me out.
What’s going on with your hair? Are you both natural blondes?
Maxwell: I highlight mine but she hasn’t touched her hair.
Skriver: If I’m on a beach vacation, I’ll put a little lemon in my hair. I’ll dip my fingers in lemon juice and just run them through my hair, it gives you a really nice highlight. But you don’t want to do that too much because it kind of burns your hair. Sometimes I’ll just dip my head in the ocean. The salt water brightens your hair like nothing else.
Since you’re always modeling lingerie, how do you get your body skin to glow?
Maxwell: I’m really big on sun cream. I try to go with a 40 or 50 SPF. I like the ones that are aerosols that give you a little sheen.
Skriver: I eat a tablespoon of coconut oil every morning or I’ll put it in my coffee if I can’t take the taste. It really moisturizes from within.
Surely 2017 is a great year for Josephine. The model was the cover of Vogue Brasil in May 2017, and now she has photographed a beautiful editorial for Vogue Germany for June 2017, which has on the cover the Dutch model Saskia de Brauw. Photographed by the lenses of the renowned Giampaolo Sgura during the month of March, Skriver appears in the editorial again with her short hair and typical German clothes.
